Blast from the past - what is the etiquette?

Although a normal working day I had an encounter today that got me thinking.
The encounter that I speak about was with a Manager that I had previously worked with and unfortunately our history together wasn't a very memorable situation.
The encounter consisted of a friendly (but forced) hello, a slight hesitation and then we both kept walking in opposite directions - one of those situations that feels like it's going in slow motion.
Although an awkward situation, my initial thought immediately after were?
Should I have stopped to talk?
Would they have stopped also?
Would we have anything to say?
So the question I ask myself, is what is the etiquette when running into a blast from the past?

However, I'm not sure why emails would not have got through. I do receive numerous emails from admin (at) orble.com everyday with stats and comment notifications.
