How long is too long?

January 4th 2008 11:06
As fellow bloggers, I'm sure many of you can relate to the relationship that you share with your laptop/computer.

You check your email before you go to work, you check emails via your phone on the way home, and then the first thing you do when you walk in the door is open up the lid and wait for your life to come through.

What I'm wondering, is when is it too much?

This is not to say that I don't socialise and talk on the phone, but put it this way, if my internet goes down for more than a few minutes I'm on the phone to my ISP to find out what has happened and the expected time frame for fixing it.

I have plenty of friends who avoid using their computers like the plague, especially after staring at a screen in the office all day. But for me, my laptop is my gateway to what's happening in the world, who's doing what and anything else that may have popped into my head during the day.

What do others think? How long do you spend on your computer each day?

I don't know if I want to answer this question...i ask it every day.
In fact Everyone else in the house is chillin watching tv or talking most nights and I'm here - -listening and typing and seeing what the internet's got for me.

But i don't usually travel very far on it.

I know it's too much time when my neck hurts...liike now for example.
I also know it's too much time when i am hungry or thirsty -0 you know sometimes you just don't want to get up....but i usually pre-empt that with something surrounding me.

and lastly....when do I know it's too late...when you're late for work - late for sleeping...or burn the toast!

Don't go asking me to add up my hours though - I don't want to know

I don't want to know either. It think it probably is too long for a lot of people. I tend to watch tv during my free time though, rather than being on the internet but I think I spend too much time doing both as it is!

That's a tough one.

I normally spend between 8-10 hours a day staring at a computer screen only to get back on it for a hour or so at night to check emails and then again for an hour or so between 4.30am-5.30am to do my blog posts.

It's certainly a modern day addiction - and I'm no exception - particular given so many of us like to be kept up to date with what's happening in the office et al - even when we're supposedly on hols.

Top question.

I cannot live without an internet connection and my phone. Well, I'm sure I could if my life was depedant on it, but i'd certainly have cravings!!

Every now and then my friend leaves her mobile off for half a week or so. It's her way of giving herself a break from communication. It's annoying when you need to contact her though!

Does checking emails at 2am and 4am and 6am when I get up to go to the loo count too?
I reckon I'm half a person without my laptop. And when the network is down... whoaa... as if I might JUST be missing that ONE crucial email that is going to change my life, only to be reconnected and be spammed with dozens of offers to enlarge my penis.
I relate... hi, I'm Jo and I'm a computer addict,
Jo

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one.

Every now and then I try to set a rule for myself on the weekend so I shut the lid of my laptop.

Eventually it 'stares' me down and I just have to open it and check a few things.

I probably am obsessed with the machine, that which my wife calls the "Damn Computer" when she is in a placid mood. But at 72, with a full time job during tax season, I feel I can take whatever pleasure I want!

My Junk Mail filter protects me from advice on increasing bodily parts, foreign lotteries and old ladies from Nigeria whose deceased husbands stole $75 gazillion.

I do check e-mail at odd hours and read newspapers and magazines from all over the world. I'm a political junkie and, yes, I admit to overdoing it!

But it's fun!
